“Into The Ether” Collodion Photography

Guest poster Aaron Muszalski over at Laughing Squid writes about a new exhibit at the RayKo gallery in San Francisco. The exhibit is a “collection of work from ten contemporary photographers who use the historic collodion - or “wet plate” - process to create their unique images.” Though the respective photographic styles of each photographer are different, all share the same vintage process. Ambrotypes, ferrotypes and tintypes are all featured in the gallery.

One such photographer mentioned in the post is John A. Coffer, who “spent seven years wandering through North America in a horse and carriage, working as an old-time portrait photographer.” After this experience, he settled down at a fifty-acre farm in upstate New York, where he now lives in a home-built single room cabin.

Though I won’t be able to check out this exhibit before it closes on August 28th, I’m a big fan of vintage photography. If I had the time and money, I would still be shooting in good ‘ol film, but the convenience of digital reigns supreme. Anyone in the San Francisco area should check this exhibit out.
