Amira: A Modern Opera is a musical currently in production, with a demo album scheduled for release in Summer 2012. Though various plans for the show have come and gone, hopes remain that Amira may eventually be turned into an indepentent musical film, taking advantage of emerging technologies to create a professional production on a low budget.

Work began on the score for Amira in 2006, and the first complete draft was finished by Summer 2008. In the early half of 2009, the show received a complete overhaul, with plans of publishing it for the stage. As technology advanced and the prospect of turning it into a feature film became a reality, the score and script were once again rewritten with this new goal in mind.

Plot Summary

Amira is the story of David, a young ex-soldier living in a war-torn state. A dreamer by nature with high hopes for a better life, David sets off with a group of idealists who aim to overthrow the political agenda of the region. Faced with news of instability throughout the country, the self-proclaimed revolutionaries thrust David into the limelight, encouraging him to take charge and become their leader.

Not long after the process begins, David meets Amira, a young woman living alone in a vacant house. With nothing to lose, she offers up her support, allowing the group to use her home as a base, and accompanying David on his journey to fight the oppressing rule. As Jonathan, David's best friend, grows suspicious of Amira's situation, she reveals that her family blood is rooted in David's enemy line. As events unfold, David must confront the struggles challenging his leadership, all while suffering personal tragedy along the way.

Loosely based on the Biblical story of King David, Amira connects elements of classical storytelling with allusions to modern-day events and conflicts plaguing the Middle East. Avoiding a concrete real-life setting, the tale acts as an allegorical depiction of basic elements of human nature, pitted against the psychological tragedy of war.
